Detail painting has begun. First washes and decals applied, giving the vehicle a darker but also glossy look. It now needs another layer of matt varnish. -

I think it's a town property marking. Maker info was usually (but not always) on the hoist end. -

As usual your skills are amazing. The opposite side of this USMC VMA-224 lighter is engraved with the pilot's name: Ray Vasconcellos. It dates to a 1957 deployment to Iwakuni. Thanks for confirming the Japanese characters for me. -

As other members have pointed out, these characters are katakana. They're probably the Japanese translation of an English-speaking male name. I'm not sure how exactly it's written, but it's pronounced something like "Re i ／ Ba su co n se ro su".
